Crust around a faucet or weak spray from a showerhead often gets blamed on hard water. That may be correct, but visible buildup alone does not prove that your whole house needs a water softener. A dripping fixture, debris from plumbing work and deposits from a single hot-water line can produce similar symptoms.

The useful question is not simply whether you can see scale. It is whether dissolved hardness minerals are creating a repeated, house-wide problem that cleaning and fixture repairs will not solve.

Test the water instead of guessing from appearance

A hardness test provides the missing evidence. Ask for a result reported as grains per gallon or milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, and make sure you know which unit is being used. A number without a unit is not useful for comparing recommendations or setting equipment.

If you use municipal water, sample untreated cold water from a suitable tap. If a softener is already installed, collect separate samples before and after the unit when accessible. This shows whether hardness is entering the home and whether the existing equipment is removing it.
