How We Rate Water Softener Companies
Every ranking on this site comes from the same scorecard. This page explains the five criteria we evaluate, how much each one counts, when a company earns a numeric score, and how this site makes money. We would rather over-explain than leave you guessing.
The five criteria and their weights
We evaluate every company against the same five questions a St. Louis homeowner should ask before signing anything. Each criterion carries a fixed weight in the overall score.

| Local ownership | 25% | Who answers when something goes wrong. Owner-operated companies, where the person quoting the job is accountable for the install, score highest. Franchise and dealer models are scored on the strength and independence of the local operation. |
| Response time | 20% | How quickly the company can get a tester or technician into a metro-area home, and how tight its service footprint is relative to where it advertises. A company that only serves its own backyard tends to show up faster than one stretched across a region. |
| Included water testing | 20% | Whether a genuine in-home water test covering hardness, iron and chlorine is included free before any quote, so the recommendation is based on your actual water rather than a script. |
| Pricing transparency | 20% | Whether a homeowner can get a clear installed price without sitting through a prolonged sales presentation, and whether that price holds from quote to invoice. |
| Service-area fit | 15% | Coverage of the St. Louis metro and its surrounding counties, including St. Charles, Lincoln, Warren, Franklin and Jefferson, where hard well water makes softening a near-universal need. |
How the score comes together
Each criterion is scored on a five-point scale, multiplied by its weight, and summed into an overall rating out of 5.0. We publish a numeric score only when we can evaluate a company directly on all five criteria: its ownership structure, its testing policy, how it presents pricing, and how it covers the metro.
Where we cannot complete that full evaluation, usually because the buying experience runs through independent local dealers whose practices vary by territory, we do not invent a number. Those companies receive a qualitative label instead, such as "Solid national option," along with a factual write-up of what the brand is known for.
- We do not publish user-submitted reviews or review counts.
- We do not fabricate ratings for companies we have not scored.
- We do not publish pricing figures for companies that have not made pricing public.
Editorial judgment, stated plainly
Our rankings reflect our editorial judgment. They are not a scientific measurement, a consumer survey, or an aggregation of third-party reviews. They are the ordered opinion of this site's editors, applied through the weighted criteria above.
We think that judgment is useful precisely because it is opinionated: the criteria reward local accountability, included testing and transparent pricing, because those are the factors that most often separate a good experience from a frustrating one in this category. If you weigh things differently, the write-ups give you the raw material to re-rank the list yourself.
