Orange rings in a toilet, rusty streaks below a faucet and brown marks on laundry often get blamed on hard water. Hardness and iron can occur together, but they are different problems. A water softener selected only for hardness may not remove enough iron to stop the staining.
Before requesting quotes, document what the water is doing. The location of the stains, the appearance of freshly drawn water and the difference between hot and cold water can help you determine whether the likely source is iron in the water, corrosion inside the home or a problem limited to one fixture.
Start with the pattern, not the equipment
Walk through the home and note every place where discoloration appears. Check toilet bowls and tanks, tubs, showers, sinks, the washing machine, the dishwasher and any outdoor fixtures supplied by the same water line.
A widespread pattern points toward a water supply or whole-home plumbing issue. A mark that appears at only one faucet is more likely to involve that fixture, its supply line or a nearby pipe. Get the water tested for the problem you see
