Water from a working softener should not taste noticeably salty. If you get salty water from a faucet after regeneration, the softener may have pulled brine through the resin tank without completing the rinse that should remove it.

Do not start by changing every setting or running several regeneration cycles in a row. First establish whether the taste is limited to one fixture, whether it appeared immediately after regeneration and whether the softener completed its cycle. Those details help separate a plumbing issue from a softener problem.

First, confirm where the salty water appears

Run cold water at two or three fixtures that should receive softened water. Include a faucet close to the softener and another farther away. Check the cold side first because a water heater can hold previously softened water and make the pattern harder to interpret.

If only one faucet tastes salty, remove and rinse its aerator, then test again. Water trapped in a small fixture line can also take time to clear. A single affected faucet is less likely to mean that the softener sent concentrated brine throughout the house.

If several cold-water fixtures taste salty, look at the softener. Note whether the problem began after a scheduled regeneration, a manual regeneration, a power interruption or recent service. If possible, record the time and the control display before pressing buttons. A service technician can use that information.

If the taste is strong or you are unsure what is in the water, stop using the affected water for drinking and cooking until the cause is identified. Put the softener in bypass if you know how to operate its bypass valve and the valve moves normally. Do not force a stiff or leaking valve.

Check whether regeneration actually finished

Look at the control panel. It should have returned to its normal service position after regeneration. A display that still shows a cycle step, an unexpected countdown or an error code suggests the process may not have finished.

Listen near the unit without opening any plumbing connections. Continuous flow to the drain, long after the expected cycle, can indicate that the valve has not returned to service. No drain flow during a rinse step can indicate a different problem, such as a restriction or a control valve that is not advancing correctly.

Write down exactly what the display says. If the controller has a history or diagnostic menu, consult the equipment manual before entering it. Avoid changing programming values simply to see what happens. The original hardness, capacity and cycle settings are useful evidence.

Inspect the drain route

A softener needs a clear drain path to rinse brine out of the resin tank. Follow the drain tubing from the control valve to its termination point. Look for kinks, crushed sections, sharp bends, sagging loops and anything recently moved against the line.

Check that the drain hose has not slipped too far into a standpipe or floor drain. Its discharge arrangement should preserve the required air gap and comply with the installation instructions and applicable plumbing requirements. A submerged or tightly sealed hose end can create drainage and contamination risks.

Do not disconnect a pressurized drain fitting or remove a drain flow control to investigate. Those checks are better left to a technician. From the outside, however, you can identify a pinched hose, a blocked termination or evidence that water is backing up around the drain.

Look at the brine tank without disturbing it

Open the brine tank lid and use a flashlight. Note the approximate water level, the salt level and whether salt is packed into a solid mass. The expected water level varies by design and cycle stage, so an unfamiliar level is not proof of a failure by itself.

What matters is the pattern. A much higher water level than usual, water close to overflowing or repeated increases between regenerations deserve prompt service. These conditions can accompany a brine valve, float, injector or drain problem.

Also check whether the small brine line between the salt tank and control valve is visibly kinked, loose or leaking. Do not pull it apart unless the manual provides a homeowner procedure and you are prepared to shut off and depressurize the equipment correctly.

Adding more salt will not correct salty tap water. Salt quantity matters only if the system needs salt to prepare brine for a later cycle. It does not complete an interrupted rinse or clear a restricted drain.

Consider what happened before the symptom

A power outage or unplugged transformer can interrupt regeneration. Depending on the controller, the unit may resume, restart or return to service when power comes back. Check whether the clock is correct and whether the display indicates a power loss.

Low household water pressure during regeneration can also prevent effective rinsing. Think about whether irrigation, laundry, showers or another high-demand appliance was operating at the same time. Also note any broader pressure problem in the house. One low-pressure event does not prove the cause, but it is worth reporting.

Recent plumbing or softener service is another useful clue. A partially closed inlet valve, reversed connection, changed drain route or altered programming can affect the cycle. Compare visible valve positions with the equipment manual. Do not assume that handles pointing in a particular direction mean the same thing on every bypass assembly.

Decide whether one manual rinse is reasonable

If the drain line is visibly clear, the unit is not leaking or overflowing, household water pressure is normal and the manual explains how to start a complete regeneration, one manual cycle may clear water left behind by an interruption.

Stay nearby during the cycle. Confirm that water reaches the drain when expected, the drain does not overflow and the controller advances back to service. Afterward, flush a cold softened-water faucet and check whether the taste is gone.

Do not keep repeating regeneration if the first attempt does not solve the problem. Each cycle uses water and salt, and repetition can hide the original failure without correcting it. Repeated salty water points to a problem that needs diagnosis.

Skip the manual cycle and call for service if the drain is blocked, the brine tank is near overflowing, the control valve is leaking, the display will not advance or you cannot identify the correct operating procedure.

What a service technician should verify

Give the technician the symptom, when it appears, which fixtures are affected and anything you observed during regeneration. Ask for the diagnosis in terms of the failed step, not just the part proposed for replacement.

A useful service check may include:

• Whether the control valve advances through brine draw, slow rinse and rapid rinse.
• Whether the injector and injector screen are clean and correctly sized.
• Whether the drain line and drain flow control allow the required flow.
• Whether the brine valve, float and brine tubing operate without air leaks or restrictions.
• Whether incoming water pressure stays adequate during the cycle.
• Whether the controller settings match the valve, tank and resin configuration.
• Whether internal seals or spacers are allowing flow between passages.

Ask the technician to demonstrate normal operation after the repair. The final check should include a completed cycle, normal return to service, no continuing drain flow and water at the tap that no longer tastes salty.

Use the symptom to evaluate the service company

A careful company should ask when the taste appears, inspect the drain path and observe the regeneration sequence before recommending major equipment. Be cautious if the only response is to sell a replacement without checking whether the current unit can draw and rinse brine correctly.

Request a written description of the problem, the proposed correction and any settings changed during service.
