A water softener installation is not finished when the equipment begins running. Before the installer leaves, you should understand what was connected, how the system was programmed and what to do if something goes wrong.
This guide walks you through installation day without requiring plumbing experience. It focuses on details you can see, questions you can ask and records you should keep. It does not replace the installer’s instructions or local plumbing requirements.
Before the installer arrives
Clear a path between the entrance and the installation area. Remove stored boxes, cleaning supplies and anything else that could interfere with carrying equipment or working around pipes. The installer should have enough room to reach the main water line, drain connection, electrical outlet and shutoff valves.
Find your home’s main water shutoff and confirm that it is accessible. Ask whether the water will be unavailable during the work and which fixtures you should avoid using. If someone in the home depends on uninterrupted water, discuss that before work begins.
Take a few photographs of the installation area and nearby plumbing. These create a useful before-and-after record. Include visible pipe connections, valves, the floor and the planned drain route.
Have the written proposal available. The equipment delivered should match the model, tank configuration and included accessories listed in that proposal. If something differs, ask for an explanation before installation starts.
Confirm the scope before work begins
Walk through the job with the installer. Ask the installer to point out where the softener will connect to the plumbing, where its drain water will go and which household fixtures will receive softened water.
Confirm whether outdoor faucets, irrigation lines, drinking-water taps, appliances or other branches will remain on untreated water. There is no single correct arrangement for every house, but the finished routing should match what you agreed to buy.
Also ask whether the job requires cutting finished walls, moving stored items or changing nearby plumbing. If the installer finds an unexpected condition, request a clear explanation of the proposed change and any added charge before authorizing additional work.
Check the equipment identity
Before packaging disappears, record the system’s brand, model and serial number. Photograph the labels so you do not have to copy long strings by hand. Keep these details with the proposal, warranty and owner’s manual.
Verify that every promised component is present. Depending on the proposal, that may include a mineral tank, brine tank, bypass valve, separate filter, leak shutoff device or other accessory. Do not assume an unlabeled tank performs a particular treatment function. Ask the installer to identify each component and explain its purpose.
Inspect the bypass and shutoff access
The bypass valve lets water continue through the house without passing through the softener. You may need it if the system leaks, requires service or must be isolated for another reason.
Ask the installer to show you the normal operating position and the bypass position. Then operate it yourself while the installer watches. A valve that technically exists but is blocked by a tank, wall or shelf will be difficult to use when you need it.
Confirm that you can also reach the home’s main shutoff. Ask which valve you should use first if you notice water on the floor. Write the answer near the equipment or save it with your system records.
Look closely at the drain arrangement
A softener needs a drain path for regeneration. Ask the installer to identify the drain line and explain where it terminates. The line should be secured so it cannot slip loose, become crushed or be mistaken for an unused tube.
Look for sharp bends, visible kinks and unsupported sections. Ask how the connection prevents drain water from being drawn back toward the treatment equipment. The exact approved arrangement depends on the plumbing and local requirements, so the installer should be able to explain why the chosen connection is appropriate.
The brine tank may also have an overflow fitting and separate tubing. Ask where that tubing leads and what the overflow can and cannot protect against. An overflow connection is not a substitute for responding to a leak or malfunction.
Inspect the electrical connection
Many control valves need continuous electrical power. Confirm that the cord reaches the outlet without an extension cord unless the equipment instructions specifically permit one. The cord should not cross a walkway, rest in standing water or pull tightly against the control head.
Ask what happens when the power goes out. Find out whether the clock, hardness setting and regeneration schedule remain stored, and which information you may need to reset.
Review the programmed settings
Do not accept “it is preset” as the entire explanation. Ask the installer to show you the settings that were entered and explain the information used to choose them.
At minimum, discuss the hardness setting, current time, regeneration trigger and any reserve or household-size setting used by the controller. If the system compensates for iron or another measured condition, ask where that information came from. Keep a photograph or written copy of the final settings.
Ask whether regeneration is based on metered water use, a fixed schedule or a combination of both. You do not need to master every menu, but you should know what normally causes the system to regenerate and how the display indicates that a cycle is underway.
Watch a manual cycle or functional check
Ask the installer to demonstrate the control panel and initiate the manufacturer’s recommended startup or functional check. The installer should verify that the valve advances correctly, water reaches the intended drain and connections remain dry under operating pressure.
You do not necessarily need to stand through an entire regeneration cycle. You should, however, understand the sounds and water movement that are normal. Ask how long the relevant cycles generally take for your programmed system and whether household water should be avoided during regeneration.
Look around every new connection while the system is under pressure. Use a flashlight if the area is dim. Moisture, a slowly forming droplet or a damp fitting deserves attention before the installer leaves.
Confirm that water service has been restored
After installation, test several fixtures around the house. Check a cold-water tap, a hot-water tap after normal flow has returned, a toilet and any fixture near the end of a plumbing run. You are checking for normal flow, trapped air, discolored water from disturbed plumbing and obvious leaks.
Ask whether faucet aerators should be cleaned after the work. Cutting or disturbing plumbing can release small amounts of debris that collect in an aerator. If a fixture has weak flow after installation while other fixtures work normally, the aerator is one reasonable item to inspect.
Confirm that any branch intended to remain untreated still behaves as expected. If an outdoor faucet was supposed to bypass the softener, ask the installer to show you which line supplies it rather than relying only on taste or feel.
Learn the salt routine
Ask which salt type the manufacturer permits and whether the installer recommends filling the brine tank completely or maintaining a lower working level. The correct practice can depend on the system and tank design.
Have the installer show you the normal salt level, the brine well and any float assembly you are expected to leave undisturbed. Ask how to recognize a salt bridge, which is a hardened space that can make a tank appear full even when salt is not reaching the water below.
Do not rely on a universal calendar for adding salt. Household water use, settings and system design affect consumption. Check the tank regularly until you learn its pattern, and investigate a sudden change rather than automatically adding more salt.
Ask what should feel normal during the first days
Water may feel different after a working softener begins treating the home, but feel alone is not a reliable performance test. Ask when the installer expects previously untreated water to clear from the water heater and household pipes.
Find out what the display should show during normal service and whether the brine tank normally contains visible water. Some designs make water easy to see, while others do not. Knowing the expected condition for your equipment helps prevent unnecessary service calls.
Ask what symptoms require prompt attention. Examples include continuous water flowing to the drain outside a regeneration cycle, water around the tanks, repeated error messages or a sudden and unexplained loss of household pressure.
Get the maintenance instructions in writing
Request the owner’s manual and any installer-specific maintenance sheet. Ask which tasks belong to the homeowner and which should be performed by a service technician.
Your written handoff should identify:
- The permitted salt type
- How to check the salt level
- How to set the clock after a power interruption
- How to start an extra regeneration when appropriate
- How to place the system in bypass
- Which filters or consumable parts require attention
- Who to contact for service
- What documentation is required for warranty coverage
If the installer recommends periodic service, ask what that visit includes. A vague instruction to “service annually” is less useful than a list of actual inspection, cleaning, testing and programming tasks.
Verify the warranty and service contact
Separate the equipment warranty from the labor warranty. Ask who handles each one, when coverage begins and whether you must register the product. Keep proof of purchase and photographs of the equipment labels.
Ask how service requests are handled after installation. Find out whether the installer services the equipment directly, what information you should provide when calling and what after-hours options exist for an active leak.

Create a simple installation record
Before the installer leaves, collect the proposal, paid invoice, warranty documents, owner’s manual and final settings. Store digital copies where another household member can find them.
Your record should include the installation company’s phone number, service contact, model and serial numbers, installation photographs, programmed settings, bypass instructions and the location of the main water shutoff. Add notes about which fixtures receive softened water.
This small file becomes especially valuable when speaking with a technician who did not perform the original installation.
Do not sign off until the basics are clear
Before approving completion, make one final walk around the equipment. Confirm that the floor is dry, valves are accessible, tubing is secured, packaging has been removed and the system is in its normal service position.
You should be able to answer four questions without guessing: How do I bypass the softener? What salt should I use? What should the display normally show? Who do I call if it leaks or displays an error?
